Metropolitan Optical Ethernet

What is Metropolitan Optical Ethernet?

Simply put, Metropolitan Optical Ethernet is the ability to expand your Local Area Network across town while avoiding the large costs associated with SONET services. The beauty of the service is in the hand-off to you. Instead of a large router capable of OCx interfaces, Metropolitan Optical Ethernet (MOE) is handed to you as an Ethernet connection. By utilizing an optical link from one location to another, that pesky Ethernet limitation of 100 meters (328 feet) is defeated.

MOE is not a complicated office-to-office VPN solution that requires massive hardware and skill to support. MOE is true Ethernet and behaves as an "extension cable" for your Local Area Network (LAN). When you want to connect multiple locations we simply provide an Ethernet cable to each location and program one or multiple Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN's) for your sites. You simply plug in our provided Ethernet connection at each location and you're connected. ipHouse MOE creates the high speed Ethernet transport for that connection, which is completely transparent to you.

In addition to connecting all of your offices, we can provide a wide range of value added solutions. When programmed to be part of your VLAN, we can provide Internet access for one or all of your linked connections. We can also provide a secure and reliable location for your offsite storage and servers. With MOE, you will be able to connect with your colocated servers at your maximum allotted MOE speed using secure VLAN technology. We can accommodate a single rack mountable server (shared cabinet) to a half-cabinet, full cabinet, multiple cabinets or a cage. We can provide a bandwidth link from 512 kbps up to 1 Gbps for your servers Internet access requirements.

In addition to our MOE solution, your employees can work remotely using our DSL services. When connected to our DSL solution, your remote employees can connect directly to your VPN solution on your network without the need to access the Internet. Their connection to your VPN will have a direct connection via our core network, adding a level of security and speed. Your remote employees may also gain direct access to your colocated servers without using the Internet.

... MOE Scenarios ...

Low cost, secure bandwidth

The ipHouse MOE service combines the power of Ethernet and existing Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) to provide relatively low cost, scalable, and secure bandwidth. MOE provides LAN-to-LAN connectivity between two or more of your locations within the metro area or connectivity from your location to a point of presence (POP) for access to other services. The MOE solution is based on distributed Layer 2 switching and shared transport data bandwidth and is suitable for data applications that include:

Link multiple locations together via Ethernet and share a single Internet access port from 5 Mbps up to 1 Gbps through our state-of-the-art data center.

Here is a sample network topology map. Just imagine the "MOE Cloud" being nothing more than a simple 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch, connected to your Local Area Network.

Benefits

Cost effective:

MOE bandwidth is less expensive than traditional SONET services. You can reduce your total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for specialized wide area network (WAN) support expertise, reducing the cost of WAN equipment with lower cost Ethernet switches and routers, and consolidating server/facilities. Increase your productivity by enabling virtual work groups across a metropolitan area.

Businesses have always been encumbered by high-priced local telco costs for T1, DS3 or OCx circuits. Not only are the circuit costs high, so are the Internet bandwidth fees. In a best-case scenario, the pricing on six bonded T1's equaling 9Mbps is approximately $2950.00 per month. Whereas, a 10Mbps MOE link including Internet bandwidth over our MOE network is only $2,620. You save over $300 per month, and gain 1Mbps. Your bandwidth is also much cleaner and MUCH more reliable.

Flexible:

Scalable bandwidth increments mean you only pay for what you need. And, you have the option of upgrading to take advantage of speeds up to one full gigabit.

Reliable:

It's Ethernet. Complicated SONET technology and expensive routers are removed from the equation. This simpler solution allows ipHouse to provide a 99.95% service level availability goal in its service level agreement (SLA).
